Gutierrez: Texans face real neglect under Ted Cruz’s failed leadership

TEXAS – Uvalde Senator Roland Gutierrez joined Kim Rubio, Uvalde Mayoral Candidate, medical professionals, gun safety advocates, and community leaders in San Antonio and South Texas this weekend. Roland Gutierrez announced his run for U.S. Senate just two months ago in July.
Gutierrez kicked off the weekend at a campaign event for Uvalde mayoral candidate Kim Rubio, who lost her daughter, Lexi, in the Robb Elementary massacre. Gutierrez and Rubio worked together to agitate for change in the Texas Capitol this spring. In a post on X, Gutierrez supported Rubio’s campaign, asserting Kim “has the courage, grit, and determination necessary to lead” Uvalde.
In McAllen, Gutierrez joined a gun violence town hall organized by Doctors for Social Responsibility, a group of physicians who have witnessed the devastating effects of gun violence on innocent children.
“The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act did good things to limit some firearms purchases and provided billions towards mental health and school security. Republicans of decent character came together and agreed on these things after Uvalde, but Ted Cruz couldn’t bring himself to stand up for those 19 children and two teachers that died in those classrooms,” said Gutierrez.
Ted Cruz is one of the GOP’s most unpopular and vulnerable senators. In 2018, Cruz narrowly escaped defeat in the general election and delivered the worst Republican general election performance since 1996. A recent UT Austin poll shows Cruz has a very low 34% favorability rating with Independent voters.
In Harlingen, Gutierrez spoke at a Northern Cameron County Democrats rally, critiquing Cruz’s lack of action on immigration and healthcare.
“Texans need a Senator who will stand up to rogue governors and tell them they must expand Medicaid in Texas, ensuring health care access for hundreds of thousands of working Texas families. Someone who will fix our broken immigration system once and for all, with a visa plan that actually works.”
“We can make those things happen, but not as long as we have Ted Cruz, who has done nothing but break the system for hard-working people his entire career.”
Roland Gutierrez is currently in Austin to serve as a juror in the Ken Paxton impeachment trial. Senator Gutierrez will campaign in Bastrop and Corpus Christi this week.
