Gutierrez announced his run against Ted Cruz, one of the GOP’s most unpopular and vulnerable senators in July. Cruz narrowly escaped defeat in his last general election, delivering the worst Republican general election performance since 1996. A UT Austin poll shows Cruz has a meager 34% favorability rating with Independent voters.
