SENATOR GUTIERREZ CONDEMNS BACKDOOR DEAL FOR RAISE OF PUBLIC SAFETY HEAD STEVE McCRAW

A broken system rewards cowardice, failure, death, and lack of accountability.

For Immediate Release: August 25, 2023

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – Senator Roland Gutierrez has issued a response to Steve McCraw, Director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, receiving a raise of $45,000.

“The system is entirely broken when the leader of an agency that failed to run in to save 19 kids and 2 teachers is granted a hefty raise. He should have been fired immediately on May 25, 2022,” Senator Gutierrez declared. “The families shattered by the Uvalde massacre deserve accountability, but instead, our broken political system shelters McCraw and his failures. For 77 minutes, this man held back 91 Department of Public Safety troopers from entering that classroom and saving those children. This is yet another indignity to the victims and their families.

“Our system is broken because of bad actors like Ted Cruz and Greg Abbott, who close ranks, dodge questions, and shield this system from scrutiny. The legislature did not explicitly authorize this raise in the budget. Instead, Abbott’s hand-picked commissioners exploit loopholes to funnel money into a raise for a man who has done nothing but lie about the failed response to the Robb shooting.”

“Texans are fed up with the elites enriching each other and patting themselves on the back for their failures, while the rest of us work hard for scraps. Texans refuse to accept the bare minimum any longer. Our voices must rise against this system that perpetuates injustice and rewards negligence.”
