TEXAS – Roland Gutierrez, candidate for the U.S. Senate, issued a statement after it was reported that Kate Cox, who sued for an emergency abortion, has fled the state to obtain the procedure after the Texas Supreme Court halted a lower court’s ruling that granted Cox an abortion for an unviable abortion.
“Texas Republicans have forced Kate Cox and thousands of Texans to travel out of state for an abortion. No one should be forced to travel thousands of miles for a routine healthcare procedure. What Republicans are doing here is exceptionally cruel and has caused untold pain and suffering. Maternal mortality rates have skyrocketed in the last two years, especially in communities of color.
“Kate Cox’s story is in the headlines, but every day there are hundreds of women in Texas who need abortions for reasons that only matter between them and their healthcare provider. Abortion is healthcare and Ted Cruz and the rest of his Republican busy-bodies have no right to be part of that equation.
“Abortion must be made legal in Texas again so that we are not putting our mothers and children in harm’s way. When I am the next U.S. Senator from Texas, I’ll do whatever it takes to protect abortion access and we will expand the Supreme Court and codify Roe.”
